JOIN RP THIS WEEKEND FOR OUR LABOR DAY SPECIALS!

L.A. THEATER WORKS PRESENTS “FIRED: TALES OF JOBS GONE BAD”

Most of us who earn a living have at one time or another been fired – let go, downsized, outsourced,

canned. Just ask actress and commentator Annabelle Gurwitch. Shortly after landing a part in a play

directed by her idol, Woody Allen, she was fired because of so-called “creative differences”.

Gurwitch channeled her bitterness into something more constructive, calling up her friends and

colleagues, and found that everyone had a compelling and often hilarious story to tell. A Labor Day

Special from L.A. Theater Works. More info online: www.latw.org

AIRTIMES:

 Sat., Sept. 4, 10a to 11a

 Sun., Sept. 5, 7p to 8p

 Mon., Sept. 6, 7p to 8p

L.A. THEATER WORKS PRESENTS “WORKING” BY STUDS TURKEL

The late Studs Terkel made a career out of listening to other people’s stories. For his 1974 best

seller Working, he abandoned the traditional question-and-answer approach; he wanted to let people

talk. And as they talked, they brought the soul of the American worker to life. Working is presented in

this special program as a musical adapted by Stephen Schwartz. A Labor Day Special from L.A.

Theater Works. More info online: www.latw.org

AIRTIMES:

 Sat., Sept. 4, 12:30p to 2p

 Sun., Sept. 5, 8:30a to 10a

 Mon., Sept. 6, 5:30p to 7p

ANTARCTICA: LIFE ON THE ICE

A one-hour special that is a sharp and compelling portrait of a continent alive with intellectual ferment, with charismatic creatures of both avian and human varieties, and with poignant human interest. Reporter Glenn Zorpette traveled to Antarctica where he interviews personnel as diverse as scientists & a bartender. Spend a night at the South Pole, talk to field scientists in one of Antarctica’s legendary, ice-free “Dry Valleys,” use the only cash machine on the entire continent, and visit the century-old expedition huts of explorers Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton. A sound-rich program with the cackling and bleating of penguins in the world’s southernmost rookery, the gentle trickling of water from an ancient glacier, and the throaty roar of a drill boring polar ice.

Radio Phoenix presents Antarctica on:

Saturday September 4th from 5-6 PM, Saturday September 18th from 12 noon till 1PM and Sunday September 19th from 6-7 PM.

TRUCKIN' MY BLUES AWAY

This music-rich hour-long special introduces listeners to the stories and sounds of four older Southern bluesmen- and to the efforts of Tim Duffy, founder of the Music Maker Relief Foundation, to help lift these musicians from poverty and obscurity.  The musicians cover a wide swath of the South: Boo Hanks from Virgilina, Va; Captain Luke from Winston-Salem, N.C.; Eddie Tigner from Atlanta; and Little Freddie King from New Orleans.  In their own words and performances, these men bring us the story of a music, an era and a culture that are uniquely American.

Radio Phoenix presents Truckin' My Blues Away on:

Saturday September 4th from 4-5 PM, Saturday September 18th from 1-2 PM and Sunday September 19th from 7-8 PM.

*Technical difficulties kept us from giving these great specials their full due in August.  We're giving you some more chances to listen in September!

Let's talk about music... two new articles!

Being in community radio and working to build this mighty indie empire is certainly rewarding in itself. But what would it be worth if were just doing it for our own enjoyment? You may not know it, but much of the time we sit around wishing someone would talk to us and ask about why we do what we do. Well, luck would have it that some fellow music lovers had really nice things to say about us:

YabYum Music is all about local music. It's an online magazine and compendium of live bands, venues, and more - focused on the Phoenix Valley. Our music director, Jeremy Deatherage, got to talk to them about our music philosophy - why exactly is it that local and independent sounds are so important to us and our listeners. Read about it here!

And then, Frank Gallardo, a contributor to the SilverPlatter, wrote about his experience as a guest deejay on his blog. So cool to get feedback and involvement from other music enthusiasts in the area. You know what? This is your music! Thanks for dropping the needle with us, we'll see you again soon!
